Anu Malik and Sonu Nigam return as judges for Indian Idol season 7

After years, Sonu Nigam has decided to return as the judge of Indian Idol season 7. Sonu had previously judged a couple of seasons of this music reality show along with music composer Anu Malik but soon several others like Udit Narayan, Javed Akhtar among others became a part of the judging panel but Sonu wasn't a part of it anymore.

And now, Sonu is all set to join hands with music director Anu Malik. On the other hand, music composer Malik was a part of almost all seasons of the music reality show and in fact, the musician also went on to be a part of Asian Idol as a judge, as the only music representative from India. Sonu Nigam was previously also associated with yet another show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV. However, Indian Idol is known for giving the music industry some popular singers like Abhijeet Sawant, Rahul Vaidya, Prajakta Shukre and even actors like Meiyang Chang and Amit Tandon.

Sonu Nigam is known for some spectacular chartbusters like 'Tu Hi Tu' (Dil Se), 'Saathiya', 'Yeh Dil' (Pardes), 'Suraj Hua Maddam' (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham), Kal Ho Naa Ho title track among others and Anu Malik has composed music for renowned films like Border, Refugee, Asoka and the recent Dum Laga Ke Haisha.

While there are no details about when the seventh season will go on air, we hear that the makers are in talks with a popular Bollywood actress to join the judging panel.

Road crossing named after late Aadesh Shrivastava in Mumbai

Readers may know that the (late) music composer Aadesh Shrivastava passed away last year after battling cancer. In the honor of the composer, a crossing has been named after him in Mumbai. The inauguration ceremony of the road crossing took place in the presence of his widow Vijayta Pandit and other celebrities like Jackie Shroff, J.P Dutta and Poonam Dhillon on Sunday.

At the ceremony, Jackie Shroff attended the event wearing a jacket which was gifted by (late) Aadesh Shrivastava and talked about the first time they had met. He said that he had met the (late) music composer when he had gone to listen the music of his film Hero. He added that Aadesh Shrivastava was one of the percussionists and soon, they became friends. He said that Aadesh Shrivastava had worked in Angaaray and got his first big break with the film Kanyadaan. They both had started their career at the same time.

Poonam Dhillon said that it was really sad that he left them so early. He was very close to them and was a cheerful person. He was a talented and God-fearing person. She said that they all miss him very much.

Filmmaker J.P. Dutta was also one of the attendees and reminisced about the time when Aadesh Shrivastava worked as an assistant for Laxmikant-Pyarelal. They were friends and he composed music for J.P.Dutta's first film Ghulami. He said that he always knew his requirements and said that he was born talented.

The late Aadesh Shrivastava sang a number of hit songs such as 'Sona sona', 'Shava Shava', 'Gustakhiyaan' and 'Gur Nalon Ishq Mitha'. He had won accolades for his work in Kunwara, Tarkieb and Shikari.

Shabana Azmi slams the proposed anti-surrogacy bill

The enormously empathetic Shabana Azmi, who played a lesbian in Deepa Mehta's Fire 20 years ago, now plays a lesbian's mother in Pakistani American director Fawzia Mirza's Signature Move.

Shabana Azmi is not happy with the government's proposal to ban surrogate parenthood.

Says Shabana Azmi, "The anti-surrogacy bill has not been thought through. Under the guise of stopping exploitation of poor women, it is retrograde in its definition of family. What's worse is that it impacts on the rights of the LGBT community and single parents. I'm pretty sure it will not be passed in Parliament, not in its present form at least."

When asked if adoption is not a viable option Shabana Azmi shoots back, "It is. But how and why should the State impose this as a no-choice? People must have the option of choice? 'G' for Government 'G' for God? Why don't they concentrate on improving the plight of poor women? We lose as many women in one year due to pregnancy complications as having 400 airplane crashes a year! Governments would fall if we had so many crashes. But since its poor rural women who are dying, no attention is being paid to maternal mortality."

Adds bi-sexual filmmaker Shonali Bose of Margarita With A Straw fame, "It's absolutely outrageous. While it's true that "rent a womb" has exploited poor women, there are other ways to ensure this does not take this place and women are doing it of their own free will.

This ban targets single parents and gay people (and what is so unusual about that) and privileges heterosexual married couples. I feel everyone has the right to be a parent, and marriage should play no part in this decision."

Ranbir Kapoor plays a singer in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

No multiple voices, no re-recordings, no double and triple versions of the same tune... Only Arijit Singh would sing for Ranbir Kapoor in Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

This was what producer-director Karan Johar and his music composer Pritam Chakraborty decided when they embarked on the musical journey that was Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (ADHM) .

It can now be revealed that Ranbir Kapoor plays a singer in ADHM. And it was decided only Arijit Singh will sing all the songs for Ranbir. According to sources, Ranbir Kapoor felt Arijit Singh suited him vocally.

Arijit Singh admits it is an added responsibility for the playback singer to give voice to an actor when he plays a singer. "I've done it earlier in Aashiqui 2, where Aditya Roy Kapur played a singer. Now with Ranbir Kapoor, I am again giving voice to the character of a professional singer, and it's different, more challenging than the usual playback singing. Ranbir Kapoor had already shot the title song with a scratch recording (song recorded in a makeshift voice). I sat and observed Ranbir Kapoor emoting to the words .Then recorded my songs."

Arijit Singh is all praise for Ranbir Kapoor. "It is very rare for an actor today to be able to hold the camera on his face for almost a minute emoting to the lyrics. Ranbir Kapoor has done it in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Not for a second does one feel he is faking the emotions. When I watched Ranbir Kapoor emoting to the words and tune, I felt inspired and challenged to give better than my best. I've seen how Ranbir Kapoor responded to the music that he had to sing in Rockstar when he played a singer. It's very inspiring for any playback singer."

The ADHM experience has made Arijit Singh realize how important it is to have an actor understand what he is singing. "Ranbir Kapoor isn't just using my voice in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. He is experiencing and savouring the words, letting them flow into his soul. It's such a pleasure to sing for him because as a professional playback singer, I know Ranbir Kapoor's screen presence will carry my song very far."

Arijit Singh says he is still recording songs for ADHM. "We haven't decided on how many songs I will sing for Ranbir Kapoor. But I can tell you this. Whatever Dada (composer Pritam Chakraborty) and Karan Johar decide, it will all add up to a grand musical experience. And for those who are raving about my first song for Ranbir in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, here's news. My second song for Ranbir Kapoor is even better. I rate it as one of the best songs I've sung so far."
